Sister Frances Barry (Philip John)

Sister Frances Barry (Philip John), 94, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Bethany Health Care Center, Framingham, Mass., on October 28, 2022. A native of Woonsocket, R.I., she was the daughter of Ovide and Bertha (Brissette) Barry.

Sister Frances entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Louis Parish, Webster, Mass., in 1946.  She graduated from St. Louis High School, Webster and earned an A.B. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and an M.A. in Pastoral Ministry from St. Joseph College, Hartford, Conn.  She was a Registered Social Worker.

Sister taught in the Springfield Diocese at Our Lady of Hope School Springfield, St. Charles and St. Mark Schools, Pittsfield; at St. Joseph School, Newport in the Providence Diocese.  She served in the Worcester Diocese at St. Paul Cathedral as pastoral minister and at Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Worcester in outreach to the elderly as well as at Dodge Park Rest Home, Worcester.

In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister is survived by her sister, Barbara Cattel and several nieces, nephews and cousins.  Sister was predeceased by her brothers Donald and John, her brothers and sisters–in–law.

All services for Sr. Frances will take place in St. Joseph Chapel at Mont Marie on Wednesday, November 2, 2022.  She will be waked from 9:00 AM with a prayer service at 9:30 AM. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at St. Joseph Chapel, Mont Marie, Holyoke, MA at 10:00 AM.  Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
