Sister Catherine Hayes (Catherine Edmund), (6/27/1926), beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham on Saturday, February 4, 2023. Born in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Edmond and Catherine (Fitzgerald) Hayes.
Sister Catherine entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Holy Name Parish, Springfield in 1948. She was graduated from Cathedral High School, Springfield. She earned an A.B. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee and a M.Ed. in business education from Boston University.
Sister taught business courses at Cathedral High from 1950-1993. She also served as Department Chair. Upon her retirement from Cathedral High School, she assisted in the Alumnae Library at College of Our Lady of the Elms until 2000. In 2006 Sister was honored by Cathedral High School for her valuable service for over 40 years. She retired to St. Joseph Residence at Mont Marie in 2008.
Sister is predeceased by her sister Madeline Hayes and Anna Marie Ferris (Donald). In addition to her Sisters in Community, she is survived by her twin sister, Mary.
All services for Sr. Catherine will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church, Holyoke, Mass., on Friday, February 10, 2023. She will be waked from 9:00 AM with a prayer service at 9:30 AM. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
