Sister Theresa Murtha (Sr. Mary Catherine), 93, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham, Mass. on January 9, 2021. A native of Pawtucket, RI she was the daughter of Mary Catherine Murtha.
Sister Theresa entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Sacred Heart Parish in Pawtucket, RI in 1953. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Pawtucket. Sister earned an A.B. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee and an M.Ed. in business education from Boston University.
Sister Theresa taught at Cathedral High School in Springfield and St. Catherine Academy in Newport, RI. She also served as registrar at the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee. Sister taught at the Business School in Providence and served as Adult Education coordinator for the Providence School Department in Providence, RI. She also worked at Geffroy Neurological, Providence, RI.
In addition to her Sisters in community, Sister Theresa leaves many dear friends as well as the wonderful, caring staff at Bethany Health Care Center.
Services for Sr. Theresa will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 with burial at 9:00 a.m. at Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke, MA. A Memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke.
