Sister Mary of Fatima Goonan, 88, (Cecelia), beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Holyoke, Mass. on January 23, 2020. Born in Holyoke, she was the daughter of Peter and Sarah (Murphy) Goonan.
Sister Mary of Fatima entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Patrick Parish in Chicopee Falls in 1956. She graduated from Holy Name High School in Chicopee and earned a B.A. from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee.
Sister taught in the Diocese of Springfield at Sacred Heart School, Holyoke; St. Mary School, Westfield; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School, Springfield and for twenty-five years at Cathedral High School, Springfield. She also served on the support staff of Mont Marie, Holyoke in several capacities.
In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sr. Mary of Fatima is lovingly remembered by her sisters-in law Ann and Mary Ann and several generations of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Nora, Theresa, John and Michael.
All services for Sr. Mary of Fatima will take place in St. Joseph Chapel at Mont Marie in Holyoke on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Sister will be waked at 10:00 a.m. with a prayer service at 10:15 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be held in the Mont Marie Chapel at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mont Marie Cemetery.
