
Sister Elizabeth Broughan (Maureen John), 71, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Mary’s Meadow, Holyoke, Mass. on February 5, 2017. Born in Greenfield, Mass. she was the daughter of John and Mary (McDevitt) Broughan.
Sr. Elizabeth entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Blessed Sacrament Parish, Greenfield in 1963. She was graduated from Greenfield High School. She earned a B.A. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee and an M.A. from Boston College.
Sr. Betty taught at St. Mary’s High School, Milford and St. Mary’s High School, Westfield, where she also served as Principal. Sr. Betty was Dean of Students and later Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Elms College, Chicopee. She served in Campus Ministry at the Newman Center at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and later worked in pastoral ministry at St. Patrick’s, Springfield. For the past 15 years she has been a Pastoral Associate at St. Michael’s, East Longmeadow.
In addition to her Sisters in community she is survived by her sisters, Sr. Maureen Broughan, SSJ of Holyoke and Mary Winchell of Glen Ridge, NJ; by her brothers John W. Broughan of Newport, RI and William Broughan of Greenbrae, CA; and by six nieces and nephews and six grandnieces and nephew.
All services for Sr. Elizabeth will take place in St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. She will be waked on Friday, February 10 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, February 11 from 9:00 to 10:30. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery, Holyoke.
