What's
New at Mont Marie Health Care Center
July 2011
New Administrator Named at Health Care Center
Diane
F. Tillman of Chicopee has been named administrator of the
Mont Marie Health Care Center, an 84-bed skilled nursing
facility operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Springfield.
Tillman has been
in the nursing home field for over 30 years and has spent
her entire career working with the elderly.
Board member and
former administrator Sister Betsy Sullivan says, “It is
with great confidence that I welcome Diane Tillman as our
new administrator. Diane comes with a strong knowledge of
regulatory issues and experience as a social worker and a
nursing home administrator.”
As
administrator, Tillman will oversee the day-to-day
operations of the Health Care Center, ensure regulatory
compliance and maintain high levels of resident and staff
satisfaction.
Tillman says,
“It’s an honor to be chosen. The Mont Marie Health Care
Center is a premiere facility that gives quality care in a
compassionate manner and my hope is to continue that
commitment to excellence.”
Tillman says she
hopes to continue the Center’s move towards
“person-centered care,” which provides a more home-like
environment and gives residents more choices in their
daily living activities.
Tillman’s
experience in nursing home administration includes three
years as administrator at Charlene Manor in Greenfield.
She has also been administrator at Renaissance Manor on
Cabot in Holyoke, director of social work/administrator in
training at South Shore Rehab & Skilled Nursing Care
Center in Rockland, Mass., and health facility surveyor
for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
Tillman holds a
bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Elms College. She
has been a licensed nursing home administrator in
Massachusetts since 2005.
May 2011
Kathleen Petroff Named Director of Nursing

Kathleen D. Petroff, RN
of Longmeadow has been named the Director of Nursing at
the Mont Marie Health Care Center in Holyoke. Petroff
entered the field of long term care 12 years ago and says
she enjoys the continuity of care and patient
relationships that are typical of working in nursing
homes.
“My goals are to
further the mission of the Mont Marie Health Care Center,
which is to provide compassionate care to all,” Petroff
says. After only a few weeks in her new post, Petroff
says she is impressed by the kindness and compassion to
residents and employees at the Center.
The Mont Marie
Health Care Center, an 84-bed skilled nursing facility, is
a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Springfield. The not-for-profit facility is open to
members of the public and serves persons of all faiths.
Prior to the
Mont Marie Health Care Center, Petroff worked at the East
Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center where she was Assistant
Director of Nursing. Her health care background also
includes several years of acute care hospital experience.

Vintage Toy Collection Brings Out Smiles
Toys from years past
delighted a group of residents from the Mont Marie Health
Care Center recently.
A collection of vintage toys and games was on display,
while collector Grace Durgin helped residents reminisce
about their childhood playtime.
Titled “Come Out
and Play”, the presentation included interesting trivia
about the playthings. The collection included marbles,
an old Parcheesi board, a wicker doll carriage, Flexible
Flyer sled, a toy typewriter and dozens of other items.
The residents
had a chance to try out some of the toys, bringing out
lots of happy memories and smiles!
November 2010
Hallways Get Fresh Look
The
hallways at the Mont Marie Health Care Center have a new look with new wallpaper and a fresh coat of
paint. Hand rails and foot guards have also been
refinished. The work was done during the month of
November.
The
redecorating project is being funded primarily by proceeds
from this summer’s Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic.
Funds from the tournament are also providing for a new
emergency call bell system. That project should be
wrapped up this winter.
March 2010
Mont Marie
Health Care Center Scores Highest in Western Mass on
Family Survey
The Mont Marie Health
Care Center, a not-for-profit skilled nursing facility
owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Springfield, was among 430 nursing homes surveyed by the
state last fall.
The Health Care
Center scored 4.79 in overall satisfaction, well above
both the statewide average of 4.22 and the Western Mass
average of 4.20 (on a scale of 1-5).
When
asked if they would recommend the Mont Marie Health Care
Center to a friend or family member, 98% of the
respondents said “yes.” Commenting on the high score,
Center Administrator Sister Elizabeth Sullivan said, “The
numbers indicate the trust level and credibility that
family members have in our staff, who respond to the needs
of residents on a daily basis with compassion, respect and
diligence.”
The survey
collected detailed information about nursing home staff,
physical environment, activities, personal care services,
food and meals and resident’s personal rights. It also
asked respondents to rate overall satisfaction and ability
to meet residents’ needs. Surveys were mailed to
approximately 34,600 family members of nursing home
residents across the state.
This is the
third time the state has conducted this survey. The Mont
Marie Health Care Center scored 4.64 in 2005 and 4.63 in
2007.
New
Family-style Dining Program
First floor residents are
now enjoying a new dining program. Linen-covered tables
greet the diners in the bright, first floor solarium for
their mid-day meal.
After being
seated, residents choose from the day’s menu selections.
They are then served by staff from kitchen carts.
The program is
designed to more closely resemble a family-style dining
experience, allowing residents to socialize before, during
and after the meal.
The program
costs a bit more than traditional dining service; some of
that cost is being funded by the Sisters of St. Joseph
Golf Classic.
The program also
requires more work on the part of the kitchen staff and
the Health Care Center employees. But judging by the
reaction of the residents, it is well worth it. Mrs. Rose
Mengel and Sr. Maria Louise London, when asked their
opinion, said, “It’s great to be able to choose from the
menu or the backup that is there. Everything is so
tasty.”
New Furniture
for Residents
Several
rooms now sport brand new furniture, thanks to everyone
who supported the 2009 Sisters of St. Joseph Golf
Classic. The proceeds from the tournament
were used to purchase bed-side cabinets, bureaus,
over-the-bed tables and room chairs.
The purchase
also included three electric beds, new dining room chairs
and three scoot chairs. Scoot chairs are similar to wheel
chairs, but allow non ambulatory residents to use their
feet to “scoot” along unassisted.
The golf
tournament has provided monies for several improvements in
the Mont Marie Health Care Center over the years.
Dec. 2008
Mont Marie
Health Care Center Receives 5-Star Rating
The Mont Marie
Health Care Center was one of only two area nursing
homes to receive the highest five-star rating from the
federal government. The 84-bed facility is a sponsored
ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield and
is located on the Mont Marie campus in Holyoke,
Massachusetts. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services rated the facility for health inspections,
staffing and quality measures in the first of what will be
monthly nationwide rankings.
The Center’s
former Administrator, Sister Betsy Sullivan, said she attributes
the high rating in part to the longevity of staffing and
good working environment. “The low employee turnover
reaps many benefits for the residents.” Sullivan said.
She added that administrators and staff take care to
provide for the residents’ emotional and spiritual needs
as well their physical needs.
Mont Marie
Health Care Center is a skilled nursing facility that
provides long-term care as well as short-term
rehabilitation. Services include physical, speech and
occupational therapy, wound care, pain management,
nutritional needs and hospice care. Originally built as
an infirmary for the Sisters of St. Joseph, the Center has
been open to the public since 1995.

nursing homes can be found at

Simulated
Sports Game Entertains Residents
Residents
of the Health Care Center can go bowling, or play
baseball, tennis or golf right in the first floor solarium
– at least virtually! The Activities Department purchased
the popular simulated sports game called Wii for the use
of the residents. The game allows people to “play” the
sport by swinging and controlling a hand-held remote. The
player’s action is then simulated on a large screen TV.
Although it took
a few practice turns at one early session, some
residents got the hang of the bowling game, even bowling a
few spares! After watching for awhile, one thing became
evident: there were as many laughs as points scored, but
who’s counting?!

Residents Enjoy Health Care
Center Van
Trips to the Butterfly House, a
local marina and doctors appointments are possible with a specially equipped van. The vehicle
allows the Center to transport a combination of
wheelchair-bound and ambulatory passengers. Residents
enjoy foliage rides in the
fall and trips to the ice cream shop in the summer. The van was purchased with donated funds
and profits from the Sisters of St. Joseph Golf Classic. The
residents and staff are very
grateful for the efforts of everyone who helped make the
purchase possible.
